Ámos 1941. januárjában kelt naplóbejegyzésében a munkaszolgálatot „ellopott időnek” nevezi. Ez a kifejezés munkásságára kettős értelemben is jellemző, egyrészről ahogyan páratlan erővel és érzékenységgel ragadta meg a lélek hangulatainak illanó varázsát, hogy a változót az örökkévalóságnak örökítse meg, mintha minden munkája a múló idővel dacolna.
