Michael Wolffsohn és Heisler András levélváltása a Sorsok házáról

Írta: mazsihisz.hu - Rovat: Hírek - lapszemle

Michael Wolffsohn a Sorsok Háza nemzetközi tanácsadó testületének tagja, nyílt levélben éles hangnemben támadta Heisler Andrást, a Mazsihisz elnökét. Közleményét a Sorsok Háza Facebook oldalán tett közzé. Heisler András válaszlevelét a Sorsok Háza Facebook oldalára is elküldte.

Prof. Dr. Michael Wolffsohn levele:
Sálom, Heisler úr!

Michael_Wolffsohn

A motivációk világosak.

Önt NEM érdekli a józsefvárosi pályaudvarra tervezett holokauszt emlékhely, Önt csak a magyarországi választások érdeklik.

Ahogy a Nemzetközi Tanácsadó Testület minden tagja, Ön is megfogalmazhatta az alapelveinket. Ön aláírta az alapokmányunkat, amely hibátlan. Most, a magyarországi választások miatt a politikai ellenfeleket „lefasisztázzák”.

E közben a magyarországi zsidó közösség számára olyan elfogadhatatlan történelemszemléleti nézeteket észlelünk, ami megmaradt reményeinket is teljesen lerombolja.

Tisztelt Prof. Dr. Wolffsohn! Levelében jelzett kritikája méltánytalan és számomra teljességgel érthetetlen. Dr. Schmidt Mária asszonyt személyében soha meg nem bántottam, munkásságával kapcsolatos kritikák megfogalmazását azonban demokratikus alapjognak tartom.

A Mazsihisz-t tudatosan úgy vezetem, hogy a szervezetet távol maradjon a pártpolitikától, a választási kampányoktól.

A Levelezés angol nyelven:

Shalom, Mr. Heisler,

assuming that your Hebrew is as fluent as my Hungarian I continue writing in English. Your behavior as well as the behavior of your institution (let alone the vulgar denunciations of Prof. Maria Schmidt) cannot be taken seriously. Its motivation is clear.

You do NOT mind about the Josephstadt memorial commemorating the Holocaust but you do mind the upcoming Hungarian elections. This is your legitimate and legal right but, please, do not mix politics with piety.

Like all members of the International Advisory Board you have been able to formulate our basics. You did sign our basic document which is unpeccable. Now, due to the Hungarian elections, the “you are a fascist” reproach is hammered on political rivals.

When dealing with the Holocaust piety should prevail, not just for OUR Jewish sake. It is not Maria Schmidt who broke piety basics, it is you. I recommend to focus on real antisemites rather than on fictional ones.

Kol tuv and, if I may say so, Jewish greetings, may there be shalom, peace. Holocaust victims as well as survivors deserve it

Prof. Dr. Michael Wolffsohn

Second Generation Holocaust Survivor

Dear Prof. Dr. Wolffsohn,

Your letter surprised me.  You voice strong opinions without being familiar with the current situation here.  Your conclusions are based on biased and false information which is unacceptable, especially in the case of a learned man, a respected scholar.  Please allow me to explain our position with respect to the unfortunate situation that has arisen.

I want you to know that when the Hungarian government first raised the “House of Fates” project, it was opposed in the Hungarian media by several Hungarian intellectuals and historians.  Mazsihisz at the time did not join this chorus.

I want you to know also that the selection of the site of the memorial at the Josephstadt Railway station was equally strongly criticized, however, – as in the view of Mazsihisz any railway station in Hungary could   have served as an emblematic location for a memorial dedicated to the Shoah – we chose not to join such critical voices.

I want you to know also that the budget of this project, proposed by the Hungarian government, was deemed exorbitantly high by many critiques.  The position that Mazsihisz took was that this matter was beyond our competence, and that the State Audit Office has the authority to examine the financial aspects of the project.

I want you to know also that the naming of the project as the “House of Fates” was rejected by the Hungarian intellectual community and the majority of the Jewish community alike, especially in light of the Nobel-prize winning novel of Imre Kertész, entitled Fatelessness!  Mazsihisz was ready for a compromise even in this matter, not that we found the naming appropriate, but, still, we did not join this chorus, either.

I want you to know also that the appointment of Dr. Mária Schmidt to head the “House of Fates” project was found scandalous by many, especially because of the ideology of the House of Terror Museum.  Outstanding historians and members of our Jewish community are not willing to accept the historical falsifications and relativization of the House of Terror Museum – still, Mazsihisz chose not to take side even in this matter, which I know by now was a mistake.  We accepted the situation and her appointment by the government.

The foregoing amply proves that our willingness to cooperate with the government and Dr. Mária Schmidt was unquestionable.  There are, however, certain limits that one must not cross. In our view, one such limit is the authentic presentation of history.  With this in mind, we asked Dr. Schmidt to set up a committee to monitor the implementation of the project, that can give us feedback in the eventuality that any error or disproportion in the presentation of history is suspected.  Our request was unheeded, although the document composed and signed by the members of the International Advisory Board including you, specifically called for the involvement of the local Jewish community.

Even as we speak we have no information whatsoever of the content details of the exhibition, we have only seen catchy blueprints. There is no script of the exhibition, and there is no meaningful dialogue. Meanwhile we have seen historical approaches that are inadmissible for the Hungarian Jewish community, and have dashed our remaining hopes.  Under these circumstances the General Assembly of Mazsihisz voted to withdraw its confidence in the “House of Fates” project, and is against its implementation.

Dear Professor Wolffsohn!  I found your criticism unfair and utterly baffling.  Never in my life have I offended Dr. Mária Schmidt, as a person, however, criticizing anybody’s work is an undisputed fundamental right.  Under my leadership Mazsihisz consciously refrains from party politics, including election campaigns.  Our criticism regarding the management of the project has nothing to do with daily politics – it is a completely different matter.

Neither myself, nor Mazsihisz is an actor in any political struggle.  In addition to having voiced strong views on Jobbik, there is no other political party in Hungary whose activity was commented by Mazsihisz. We did not call anybody a Fascist, our criticism has always been dispassionate.

I resent your tone in lecturing us how to pay tribute to the victims of the Shoah.  This is our duty and moral obligation that we pursued even in those years when the reigning power tolerated no shape or form of Jewish self-organization in Hungary.

Budapest, March 9, 2014

Sincerely yours,

András Heisler
President, Mazsihisz
